The opportunity

Taxpayers can fund scholarships for students in need, for free.

A new federal law gives individual taxpayers a dollar-for-dollar credit of up to $1,700/year for donations to Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs).

SGOs collect donations and issue scholarships to qualifying students at private and religious K–12 schools, including Catholic, Christian, Jewish, Islamic, secular independent, classical, Montessori, special-education and more. Scholarships can also fund tutoring and special needs services for public school students, supporting programs cut in many districts.

More than 30 states had already opted in as of mid-2026, with more expected to follow. Tax credits go into effect Jan 1, 2027.
